Happy us!

In 2005 I met a good friend through Exmoor Search and Rescue, who unfortunately I lost contact with.  My friend was an ex-military medic who served the UK in the first Gulf war who was now running a successful remote area first aid training company.  It became clear that my friend was unwell and after a short time he confided in me, he was suffering from PTSD.  He became very unwell and could no longer run the company.  I had been working alongside him at several courses and one day he handed me all of his training equipment and client details.  For this I'm truly thankful but saddened by the circumstances.  PTSD is a cruel illness that takes so many lives each year, this I've seen when working for ambulance services.

In 2006, Mountain Trauma Rescue Services was registered and born.  I left my post as at an outdoor education centre in Devon and moved to Ambleside, Cumbria to start a degree in Outdoor Studies at the University of Cumbria.  In my first year of trading I managed to fit in and deliver ten outdoor first aid courses around the country.  There couldn't have been many students sharing their small student accommodation with a dozen training manikins and boxes of dressings!  The income from these courses helped me through my studies.  Year on year the business continued to grow.

Having completed the Outdoor Studies degree I managed to secure a place on another degree programme that started in 2009, this time to study as a paramedic student at University of Central Lancashire.  It was during this time the services we offered began to expand.  I took the leap and invested in equipment and vehicles that enabled us to provide medical and rescue support to outdoor and extreme sport events, having identified a gap in the local market.  We still have a strong working partnership with one of our first event clients, Lakeland Trails.  We also started offering CPD education courses suitable for clinicians from the NHS, private sector and mountain rescue teams as well as growing our first aid course portfolio.  At the same time I became an employer and since then have had a fantastic team working with me!

Since then we have continued to grow.  Today we work with many prestigious event organisers from around the UK, travel the country to deliver a range of medical education course and are a leading figure in outdoor sport safety promotion.  We employ around 60 clinicians and rescue personnel to deliver our services.  Utilising a fleet of 4x4 vehicles, boats and the latest medical equipment we're able to provide expert care to event competitors.  Mountain Trauma are also accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons and Edexcel to name a couple.

The future is constantly on our minds and we are currently reviewing business strategy.  A new website and online candidate management system are currently being developed.  We hope to make many more event and training partnerships and continue to meet interesting, talented and inspiring people along the's to the next 10 years!"
